Viviers / Drôme Ardèche
In the heart of the Land of Art and History of Southern Vivarais
The Relais du Vivarais flourishes in the city of Viviers, the administrative and religious capital of the Vivarais region, located on the right bank of the Rhône, in southern Ardèche. It preserves a rich heritage from its prestigious past, including numerous listed monuments: the town hall, housed in the former episcopal palace; the 18th-century Hôtel de Roqueplane, now the seat of the bishopric; the Saint-Vincent Cathedral in Romanesque, Flamboyant Gothic and 18th-century styles, with its choir decorated with Gobelins tapestries and its marble high altar; the 16th-century Maison des Chevaliers and its magnificent Renaissance façade decorated with medallion busts; the Grande Rue with the elegant private mansions of Beaulieu and Tourville, both dating from the 18th century... Beautiful panoramas over the rooftops of the town and the Rhône Valley are revealed from the upper town, notably from the Châteauvieux belvedere but also by taking the paths that lead to Notre Dame de la Joannade or to the Saint-Michel statue. Less than 30 km from our hotel, several remarkable sites are available to you, including: the Gorges de l'Ardèche - an impressive canyon with its dizzying cliffs (up to 300m), the Donzère gorge, the Chauvet Cave-Pont d'Arc - head of prehistoric cave art, Montélimar - the gourmet, the Château Grignan - the largest Renaissance castle in the South-East of France or Mirmande - a charming town classified among the most beautiful villages in France.... And 40 km away, the Aven d'Orgnac, a cave in the prehistoric town, labeled a Grand Site de France. To discover with the family around our hotel:
- The Crocodile Farm (13.8 km) - The largest animal park in Europe dedicated to reptiles
- The Forest of Games (25 km) - Paths under the oaks and box trees, "nature" games, made of wood, pebbles, flowers... A forest of poetry, of fantasies!
- The Educational Farm of Lussas

The Episcopal Palace
Currently used as a Town Hall, this palace was built between 1732 and 1737 by Claude Projet (master mason) according to the plans of the architect Jean-Baptiste Franque.
The building has been listed as a historic monument since 1989.
It's well worth a visit, especially since you'll find the tourist office on the ground floor.
